5 Steps to Finding Stable Housing in California

Finding stable housing in California can feel impossible — but it's not. Whether you're experiencing homelessness, living in a shelter, or at risk of losing your current home, there are programs and resources available to help. Here are five practical steps to get started.

Step 1: Get Connected to a Housing Navigator

Housing navigators are trained professionals who know the local housing landscape — what's available, what the waitlists look like, and how to get your application to the top of the pile. At Mysti's, our housing navigators work directly with you to find options that match your needs and your timeline. Call us at 833-312-7466 to get connected.

Step 2: Make Sure Your Medi-Cal Is Active

Many housing programs require active Medi-Cal enrollment. If your Medi-Cal has lapsed or you've never enrolled, that's OK — we can help you apply or reactivate it. Medi-Cal is free for qualifying Californians, and it opens the door to both healthcare AND housing assistance through CalAIM Community Supports.

Step 3: Gather Your Documents

Most housing applications require identification. Start gathering: a government-issued ID or driver's license, your Social Security card, proof of income (if any), and any medical records or letters from providers. Don't have these? Your case manager can help you obtain replacements.

Step 4: Apply to Multiple Programs

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to Section 8 (Housing Choice Vouchers), rapid rehousing programs, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing. Each has different eligibility requirements and wait times. Your housing navigator will help you figure out which ones to apply for.

Step 5: Stay Connected and Follow Up

Housing waitlists can be long, but staying in contact with your navigator and checking on your applications regularly makes a real difference. Programs sometimes have sudden openings, and the people who respond fastest get placed first. Keep your phone charged, check in regularly, and don't give up. If you need help with any of these steps, Mysti's Adult & Family Services is here. We serve 6 California counties and we meet you where you are. Visit mystis.org or call 833-312-7466.
